START WITH SCIENCE KITSScience Programs for Children Ages 4 and 5 |
Start With Science kits are programs designed for use by librarians, preschool, daycare, and school personnel working with preschool children in the Mohawk Valley Library System (MVLS) area (Fulton, Montgomery, Schenectady, and Schoharie counties). The kits promote science and reading literacy skills among children ages four and five. Each kit focuses on a science theme, and includes stories, activities, and science equipment. In addition to the science items, a program sheet, bookmarks for children, and a short evaluation form are included in each kit. Consumable items that need to be supplied by each user group are listed. Resource titles are listed with each kit and books can be borrowed at or through member libraries.
Kit materials are a resource, not a prescription. Borrowers should use kit materials appropriate for their group and feel free to combine kit components with other materials of their own choosing. Resource booklists include titles of science books filled with appropriate activities for this age group. Feel free to “experiment”!
Since “science is the study of the world around us,” possibilities for program activities are endless! Introducing children to science at a young age fosters the love of learning and reinforces the growth of pre-reading and science skills.
