  • Free Webinar – Science Literacy : It’s Not Just for Kids

    Date: Tuesday, January 24, 2023
    Time: 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
    Place: Online at https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/science-literacy-not-just-for-kids.html
Presenters: Betha Gutsche, WebJunction Program Manager; Ash Kunz, STEM Services Manager, NCW Libraries (WA); and Vivienne Byrd, Librarian III, Exploration & Creativity Department, Los Angeles Public Library (CA)

While libraries have enthusiastically met the challenge to positively influence kids’ and teens’ attitudes, skills, and knowledge about STEM topics, adult-centered science programs are scarce in libraries. Youth have access to many creative, engaging, hands-on programs that use informal learning to develop exploration, experimentation, and computational thinking. But why are kids having all the fun (and skill enrichment)? As citizens and voters, adults are asked to make decisions that increasingly involve complex science. Join this webinar to learn about programs that make adult science learning fun and enticing, and that get people involved in investigating their environment. Join the conversation about expanding adult learning to include identifying environmental issues, applying science-based strategies, and working together to find solutions and take action for their communities.

  • Free Webinar – Dementia 101 for Public Library Staff

    Date: Thursday, January 19, 2023
    Time: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
    Place: Online at https://www.librarieslearn.org/calendar/csl-in-session-dementia-101-for-public-library-staff
Presenter: Amy DelPo, Denver Public Library

More than 6 million people in the United States have dementia. Once you add in 15 million friends, family members, and caregivers, the numbers represent a significant segment of the population served by public libraries. This means that the dementia community is already in your library.

The question is not will you serve this community, but will you serve it well? Your staff encounters people with dementia daily.

    • Do they understand the behaviors they encounter?
    • Are they welcoming to this vulnerable group?
    • Do they feel empowered to provide services and programs that improve quality of life?

This interactive session will help public library staff understand dementia and develop effective communication strategies. It will also provide ideas about programs and services for this growing population of patrons.

  • Free Webinar – Level Up Your Book Displays

    Date: Wednesday, January 18, 2023
    Time: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
    Place: Online at https://tinyurl.com/ypnrx3tm
    Presenter: Faithe Miller Lakowicz

Book displays are more than a simple tool for passive Readers’ Advisory. A well-crafted display captures patrons’ attention, sparks imagination, and sends subtle (or not-so-subtle) messages about your library’s values and institutional culture.

In this presentation, Faithe Miller Lakowicz shares practical approaches for maximizing the impact of book and media displays, including low-cost “hacks” for maximizing visual appeal; highlighting diversity, equity, and inclusion; honing an institutional voice; using displays to create bridges between library departments; and ensuring that displays are accessible and compelling for a variety of patrons.

If you’re interested but not able to attend the live webinar, go ahead and register. We’ll send a recording to all registrants after the fact.

  • Free Webinar – Jargon-Free Libraries : Using the Language of Our Patrons

    Date: Wednesday, December 14, 2022
    Time: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
    Place: Online at https://www.librarieslearn.org/calendar/csl-in-session-jargon-free-libraries-using-the-language-of-our-patrons
    Presenter: Beth Crist

We communicate verbally and in writing with our patrons constantly—on our websites, social media, promotional materials, signage, in one-on-one conversations, during programs and classes, and more. It is all too easy for library jargon—so ingrained in our everyday language—to slip into those communications.

These words and phrases are so common to us, but not to many of our patrons, and using these terms can create real barriers to using libraries. Join this interactive session to explore some real-world examples of common library jargon in everyday communication, learn how to scour your communications for jargon, and consider plain-language alternatives to these terms and phrases, thus making your library more accessible.

    Learning Outcomes

    • Participants will be able to recognize library jargon and come up with plain-language alternatives to make their libraries more accessible.
    • Participants will be able to formulate a plan to examine their library’s signage, policies, and online communications for library jargon.

No registration is needed. Use the Adobe Connect URL below to join the session.
