If 2020 has shown us anything it’s that, now more than ever, library staff need to find creative and flexible ways to bring resources and programming to families where they are in their communities. Additionally, we must continue finding new ways to serve families who have been left out of traditional library programming in order to build equity, develop inclusive practice, and encourage diverse voices.

In this session, a panel of youth services presenters will share their approach to serving families in poverty, immigrant communities, and rural communities as examples of how library services and programs can be designed with the changing needs of today’s children and families in mind.

At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will:

  • Kidbytes is on Pinterest

Kidbytes is using Pinterest, an online pinboard to collect and share what inspires us. MVLS and UHLS collaboratively have set up LibraryKidbytes, on Pinterest. We’ve started celebrating books the just might be on those 2014 award lists! You know, the Caldecott, the Newbery, the Printz, the Sibert, the Geisel, the Wishful Thinking but probably doesn’t have a chance but someone loved it anyway. Take many looks, as titles are added as we read and find them, and please suggest your favorite titles and add your comments! We look forward to them.

  • Picture Book City

    Johnstown picture book reorganization

Over the next few months, children’s areas in Johnstown, Middleburgh and Schoharie will be transformed into Picture Book Cities! What is a Picture Book City? It’s is a collection of picture books and age-appropriate non-fiction arranged in ‘neighborhoods’ by subject. Color coded labels make it easy to identify books in the same neighborhood. Want books about fairies and princesses? Look for the pink labels. Animals? Head for the light green section. Organizing picture books in this new way helps develop young children’s pre-literacy skills by allowing them to easily find books they are interested in. (It’s great for staff and parents as well. Answering the ever popular “I’m looking for truck books” question has never been easier!) Check out the growing rainbow of color in Johnstown’s children’s room. We’re really excited about this project and thank our pilot libraries for being pioneers!
